East Meadow Career Academy Students Welcome Senator McCarthy
On Monday, May 10, 2010, the Career Academy students at East Meadow High school proudly welcomed Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy to observe the success of the Global Business Academy.

In Career Academies, the classroom curriculum is geared towards a specific industry and students are given real world opportunities to experience hands-on learning in the given field of study. Long Island Works Coalition establishes this partnership between the academic and business communities in order to foster the development of a skilled and educated workforce.

Throughout the academic year, East Meadow High School students collaborated on a Franchise Project, where students were first taught how a franchise operates in the business domain and then were asked to imagine what it would be like to have the same franchise in another country abroad. Students met weekly as a team to discuss marketing plans, economic trends, cultural traditions and practices, accounting, return investments, and corporate law.

It was an honor to have Congresswoman McCarthy visit the Career Academy to view firsthand the impact this type of learning has on the entire school community – students and teachers alike. It was evident the students really enjoyed working together, were challenged by their assignments and benefited greatly from a broader approach to problem solving.
