Winthrop University Hospital Career Day, Thursday April 15, 2010
Massapequa Students Learn About Health Careers

Based on initial responses from the students and Winthrop employees, today’s Career Day was a tremendous success! Students learned about career opportunities within all areas of the hospital as well as the educational requirements for them. Winthrop employees from many departments volunteered their time to speak with our students.  Some of the areas represented included pediatric nursing, radiology, orthopedics, pharmacy, respiratory, informatics, lab/research, social workers, home healthcare, infection control, poison control, community service and the Nassau County Department of Health. We learned that volunteer opportunities are available within the hospital for our students 14 years of age and older. The students even had the chance to watch a casting demo for broken limbs!

Diane Bachor and many other Winthrop employees complimented the sincerity, inquisitiveness and maturity of our students. They were also impressed by the level of student interest toward future careers. Many of the employees said that this was the most rewarding experience they ever had with any high school students. Students were required to dress in corporate casual attire and complete an assignment while at the event. Winthrop will provide us with photos taken today that their PR rep will be using for their publication.

Three of the hospital employees are Massapequa/Berner graduates, some of whom have participated in our onsite career events. They are Brian Malone, Margaret Fusco and Alice Nash. We appreciate their time.

Once again, thank you to Denise DeLury and Diane Bachor for planning the event and ensuring that it was mutually beneficial for Massapequa students and Winthrop employees. The support of teachers who attended the event with their Science, Health, and Business Education classes and as chaperones contributed to the importance of this career exploration opportunity. The continued support of our Board of Education, district administration and the Massapequa Partnership for Career Development has been essential to the success of our programs.

We look forward to developing many new partnerships and Career Exploration opportunities for our students.
